Attempting repairs, while lacking the knowledge of chimney design and construction is dangerous and costly. RL Sanborn Masonry has 25 years of experience building, restoring and repairing chimneys. We pour adequate reinforced footings, build brick chimneys, cut and set stone chimneys, install flues, clean outs, crowns (hand built with brick trim not pre cast), stone caps, piers and flashing as well as apply quality sealants masonry. We leave the job site as we found it. It is advisable to apply sealant to new and restored masonry to prevent the infiltration of water. Water permeates brick and mortar and when it freezes it expands and cracks the mortar and brick. This process repeats over time. Sealants last about 5 years and should be re applied to maintain the masonry For optimal longevity. If the mortar crumbles and the crumbling is consistent in most spots then it is time For a complete restoration. If the decay is isolated, some point work and or replacement of brick should be done. What is masonry? Masonry is the building of structures from individual units laid in and bound together by mortar. The common materials of masonry construction are brick, stone such as marble, granite, travertine, limestone; concrete block, glass block, and tile. Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern the units are put in can strongly affect the durability of the overall masonry construction |
